RoboWiki - Restrict Account Creation

Postby Tanner » May 15th, 2010, 11:46 pm

Hi,

As an idea to prevent spam accounts and other things, I thought of to restrict account creation.

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Pr ... t_creation

The way things would work then is that users would have to request an account (by probably posting on here somewhere) and then a sysop would then create it, emailing them a random password. Easiest way to manage, though requires users to ask for things (which could turn off submissions).

Another way would be to allow accounts, but not let normal users (i.e. anyone who's registered) edit anything. To edit, users would have to be in a certain group, which then again they would have to request/prove they need to edit. A bureaucrat could then change the user's group in the wiki, allowing them to edit pages. There'd be some "Allowed to Edit" group or something.

Thoughts? Specific one?

Edit: I kinda like the idea just restricting account creation, though it kinda puts off the amount of edits to the wiki that people do. What I'm trying to say it that if I'm a user, and see something that is wrong, I might not ask for an account just because it takes time, though it's probably better that way? Maybe? IDK.

I'm not really sure which idea I like better at the moment. Both have pro's and con's.

Disabling registration requires that a sysop (i.e. administrators) creates the accounts. I don't really want to make too many people sysops.

Having another group with the edit permission is nice as bureaucrats can make people these, though I just realized that bureaucrats can also make people administrators, so that's not entirely a good thing on it's own.

Looks like I've come to the conclusion of what will be done. You must request an account before editing the wiki.

Created a process on how to request an account. Lookie here:

I think the Wiki isn't sending out emails yet, but I'll get that working soon I think.
